Useful Hamster-related Resources

Useful Hamster-related Resources. And sometimes not incredibly useful, but at least serious in intent. This broad category covers handy information on hamsters, dry and sometimes rather macabre medical information on hamsters, and so on. Stuff, in short, that has some practical application, interesting or not.

alt.pets.hamsters NEWS
The definitive (well... the only) hamster-related newsgroup, aside from the more general rec.pets, since the vote for rec.pets.hamsters was defeated a deadly blow. This group may or may not be available from your news server.

alt.pets.hamsters FAQ
The Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document for the newsgroup above, maintained by Glen Gower.

The Dwarf Hamster!
A very helpful information page for owners of dwarf hamsters.

Entrainment of syrian hamster circadian activity rhythms by neonatal melatonin injections.
Cruel and unusual treatment of unborn babity hamsters.

Gerbil FAQ
Okay. I fibbed a bit on the first page. This is a non-hamster page. But it's here for a reason! Much of the advice in this FAQ is very sensible and much applies to hamsters. There are some obvious differences, of course. For instance hamsters have really short tails and so the advice concerning wheels isn't as crucial. And hamsters are solitary loner animals whereas gerbils are sociable critters.

Good news for alcoholic hamsters
Well, with a title like that how could I not list this one? It's an article about some mean alcohol pushers disguised as scientists who are testing a Chinese herb for its efficacy at curbing alcohol consumption. So if, late one night, you see a run-down drunk hamster on the street, clutching a lamppost for support, you'll know it was done in the name of Science.

Guinea Pig, Hamster
An entry from an American kids' encyclopaedia that briefly mentions hamsters.

Hamster Biology, Care, Diseases and Models
A fact sheet via gopher full of gruesome medical information about hamsters and how they're used in medical research. Poor things. Here's a typical quote: "It was concluded that the European hamster is a more suitable model than the Syrian hamster for highly concentrated and prolonged smoke inhalation studies."

Hamster Cell Lines
If you ever try searching the Web for references to hamsters you'll definitely turn up a million references to this Italian site which is chock full of biomedical information on the cell structures of hamsters. Oh, boy.

Hamster Diseases
More grim news on the illnesses that our furry pals can sometimes contract.

Hamster House - Caring for your Pet Hamster
Splendid page, this. If you're recently acquired a hamster and don't know how to look after it, give this page a quick glance. Contains lots of very useful information about keeping a hamster pet.

Hamster On-line
Still under development. An attempt to assemble a useful hamster information page. Could do with a spelling checker...

National Hamster Council
Sort of conjures up images of wise, elderly hamsters sitting around a polished mahogany table in a plush boardroom, making sage pronouncements about the future of Hamsterkind, doesn't it? It's actually the British hamster club's page.

NetVet - Rodent Home Page
The NetVet resource list has this page dealing with rodents. Includes a few pointers to hamstery pages, all of which are also listed here. At Washington University, Missouri.

NorthBow Hamstery

Does this sound gross or what?

rec.pets.*: Grief and Pet Loss FAQ
It would be churlish to put this under the "Useless" heading.

The response of the adult mammalian gustatory system to peripheral nerve injury
This is gripping stuff! I think I'm going to have to stop listing these gruesome hamster resources...

Rodents as Pets
This is a great page! Not exactly flashy - it's basically plain text - but just chock full of helpful information about rodents. Admittedly, they describe hamsters as "evil" but, that detail aside, you'll find a lot of great tips here on keeping your hamster happy and healthy. They also have a detailed hamster section with more rude remarks about hamsters' social habits.
